The Pros and Cons of Soy
For the last decade or so, we are encouraged to incorporate more soy into our daily intake, especially if we are not meat eaters. Soy becomes an important supplement in our dietary. We see more tofu, soy milk, and soy products in our supermarket now, so here is a look on the pros and cons of soy.
The Good Things about Soy
- High quality protein
- Low in artery-clogging fat
- Rich in iron, zinc, and some calcium
- Soy protein may moderately lower cholesterol
- Soy isoflavones may reduce bone mineral loss
- Whole soy may help with symptoms of menopause
Side Effects of Soy
- Increase the risk of breast cancer for those who are at risk
- Interfere with thyroid function by reducing the absorption of thyroid medications
If you have breast cancer, or at risk of having cancer and you are taking thyroid medication, talk to your doctor before making the change. Otherwise, try adding more whole soy foods to your daily intake!

Wow I had no idea that the increase of soy can lead to breast cancer. I’m a vegetarian so I get most of my protein from soy… this is kinda scary.
I didn’t know about the side effects of soy. I use soy milk daily with my cereal. Not only are there health benefits but I love the taste.
Soy increasing the risk of breast cancer? Has a controlled study been done on that? Where did you hear about that? Just curious.
